Kick out and relax as the tow-dingy will speed over to pick you up and take you back to the line-up where you will repeat the cycle until you or the sunlight gives out! Then head back to the resort, where you will relax in the sauna, steam room or jacuzzi, before being served a first-class meal designed to keep you healthy and re-energize for another day of the best waves of your life. The legend of Chicama and Chuck Shipman
Located on the Central Coast of Peru, Chicama is a small and isolated fishing village that has been continuously populated for several thousands of years. This point-break may be one of the places where humans first learned to surf; as evidenced by the surf-craft fashioned from reeds (caballitos de totora) that the local fishermen have been using for the past 5,000 years and only recently replaced with wooden pangas and outboard motors.
The first modern surfboards arrived in the mid-1960s, soon after Chuck Shipman spotted the point from the window of a plane that was returning him to Hawaii.
The legend goes that Chuck ran up to the cockpit and asked the pilots to give him the coordinates of this location. Upon returning to Hawaii, he sent a letter to his Peruvian friends Joaquin Miro Quesada, "Chino" Malpartida and Carlos Barreda, with the coordinates. It would take a couple of road trips from Lima, before the explorers hit upon the right dirt road that led from the Panamerican highway to Puerto Malabrigo, otherwise known as Chicama! Mr. Shipman would return to ride the longest waves of his life here, after his friends confirmed the finding. Since then, Chicama became the legendary endless wave that many have dreamt of, but only few have truly experienced.
(Please help us out in tracking down Chuck Shipman. We at Machapu Adventures would really like to invite Chuck back to Chicama, as a gesture of gratitude and respect, so if anyone knows him or how we can reach him, please help us out! Chuck Shipman has a standing offer to return for a visit to Chicama with us!)
We believe that Chicama is a sacred place, one of the natural wonders of the world that must be preserved. The endless perfection of its relentless sets of waves is depicted on many of the temples of our ancient ancestors that have withstood the test of time, just like Chicama. You will surely feel enlightened, if you can catch a wave at the point and make every section all the way down to the pier! The waves you ride in Chicama will remain locked in your memory forever: one of the greatest achievements in the life of any surfer.

What you should know:
* Chicama is located 10 hours driving time north from Lima on a very bad road. We do not advise travel by land, unless expressly requested in combination with a longer surf tour to other amazing surf spots between Lima and Trujillo. Trujillo is the closest airport to Chicama, 45 minutes driving time.
* Chicama is 10 hours driving time south of Mancora and Cabo Blanco on an even worse road!
* Other surf spots in the region include Huanchaco, Pacasmayo and Puemape.
* Everyone should visit Huanchaco, where our friends at the Muchik Surf School will give you a lesson in riding a
caballito de totora!
* We strongly encourage guests to plan on visiting the ancient city of Chan Chan and other archeological ruins in close proximity.
* We strongly discourage foreign visitors from traveling to Chicama or any part of the Peruvian coastline without the company of a local guide, Peru is much larger and confusing than Central America, so just because you've been to Costa, doesn't mean you can get around Peru alone just as easy... Machapu Adventures takes all the guess work out of your trip, so you can enjoy the surf and avoid any hassle.
